Cormac Cullinan

Director
Cormac
is a senior environmental lawyer and adviser on institutional, policy
and regulatory reform in the fields of environment and natural resource
management. His work in pioneering a legal philosophy that restores an ecological perspective to governance systems (Earth jurisprudence) is internationally recognised and in 2008 led to his inclusion in “Planet Savers: 301 Extraordinary Environmentalists”.
He was admitted as an attorney in March 1989 and has specialised
in environmental law since 1992 when he completed a Masters degree
in environmental law at the University of London.
With talents that include strong creative communication, writing, drafting
and leadership skills, Cormac is known for developing practical
and innovative approaches. He is an expert on international and
South African environmental law and policy and acts for a wide range
of public sector, private sector and NGO clients.
Cormac is also a director of EnAct International, an honorary research associate of the Universtity of Cape Town, and a member
of the IUCN Environmental Law Commission.
Wide-ranging experience in policy formulation has given Cormac
particular expertise in drafting legislation and international treaties
as well as in designing and strengthening governance systems (including
laws, policies and institutions). He has worked on these issues
in more than 20 countries, including 10 in sub-Saharan Africa. In
the academic field he has lectured and written widely on governance
issues related to human interactions with the environment and is
the author of Wild Law as well as of several works commissioned
and published by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United
Nations.
Gregory
Daniels l

Director
Gregory
has been practising environmental law at C&A since 2003 after
completing his articles at the Legal Resources Centre in Cape Town.
He is also employed as a consultant at the Cape Town branch of EnAct
International. Gregory has wide experience in South African environmental
law as well as the laws of numerous SADC countries.
As a committed proponent of environmental concerns he continues
to participate in and provide input to parliamentary discussions
regarding environmental legislation. Gregory acts for numerous clients
for whom he prepares opinions, provides advice in relation to environmental
legal compliance and assists in keeping those companies up to date
with the latest environmental legislation and its possible impacts
on their activities. Coming from a coastal community, Gregory has
a particular interest in the successful development and allocation
of fishing rights, a field in which he has completed his LLM dissertation.
He also regularly drafts administrative appeals for clients in relation
to decisions pertaining to both land use planning and environmental
impact assessment issues.
Sarah Kvalsvig l

Director
Sarah was admitted as an attorney in 1997. She
joined C&A as an associate in 2005, prior to which she had practised in Durban as a litigation specialist and in London at two commercial law firms. She became a director of the firm in March 2008 and is also a director of the Cape Town branch of EnAct International.
Since joining C&A, Sarah’s practice has included providing opinions for clients on all aspects of environmental, heritage and planning law, conducting High Court litigation on environmental matters and providing advice on environmental legal compliance to both public and private sector clients. She has a thorough understanding of administrative law and has drafted administrative appeals and responses for various clients. She has a particular interest in biodiversity law, which is the subject of her Masters dissertation.
Barry Adams l  BComm LLB
Barry is a commercial lawyer with more than 23 years' experience, and is a former director of Mallinicks and of Webber Wentzel where he was part of the private equity team. He is currently a member of the Corporate Law Alliance, an alliance of senior, independent attorneys with complementary skills who collaborate to provide clients with bespoke corporate law transactional and advisory services. His area of expertise also includes all aspects of private equity and venture capital, including fund formation and transactional advice and local and cross border transactions.
Glendyr Nel l 
BA LLB LLM (Environmental Law)
Associate
Glendyr joined Cullinan & Associates Inc in June 2008. Prior to this, she practised for four years as a specialist environmental lawyer in a large KZN commercial law firm. As part of her interest and involvement in development applications, she also undertook related planning work.
The nature of the environmental services Glendyr provides includes legal compliance, due diligence, permits and licensing, contracts, legal opinions and appeals to the provincial department of environmental affairs. She has worked in Namibia and South Africa, assisting clients in various commercial and industrial fields. These include the automotive, banking, chemical, food, electronics, cement, packaging, petroleum, mining and waste (including health care risk waste) sectors. Glendyr has also provided legal services to the public sector where she has assisted with environmental legal compliance at every port in South Africa and provided advice to local municipalities with regards to their environmental rights and obligations.
Glendyr serves on the Board of Management at the Durban Chamber of Commerce and heads their Environmental Committee. She has a special interest in sustainable development and in the practical and legal adaptations necessary for climate change. Glendyr is also a consultant with EnAct International.
Megan Adderley l 
BA LLB (Rhodes University)
Candidate Attorney
Megan joined the Cape Town branch of Cullinan & Associates in 2009 where she is currently serving her articles of clerkship. She studied at Rhodes University and completed her LLB with academic honours (cum laude) in 2007. She has received numerous academic awards including the prize for Best Third Year Law Student (2005) and Best Student in Environmental Law (2007). While at university she founded a society aimed at empowering the local community through legal knowledge, she was presented the Rhodes Centre for Social Development Student Volunteer of the Year award (2007) and the Amnesty International Rhodes Woman of the Year award (2007) for her outstanding contribution to the broader Grahamstown community. She has also spent a year working as a high school teacher.
Since joining the firm, Megan has gained experience in preparing reports for environmental legal audits and updating legal registers, drafting administrative appeals and writing legal opinions. She has also been involved in High Court litigation to prevent illegal mining.
Jenna Bowles
Senior Secretary
Jenna joined Cullinan & Associates in May 2009. A qualified secretary with previous experience in the legal field, Jenna excels in organising logistical arrangements and confidently attends to general ad hoc requests. She is a committed team player with proficiency in MS Office and excellent typing skills. Jenna is passionate about nature and wildlife and has a diploma in Wildlife Management. She has a keen interest in marine biology and currently volunteers at Cape Town’s Two Oceans Aquarium.
Elana Farr
Personal Assistant
Elana joined the KwaZulu Natal branch of Cullinan & Associates in May 2009 and provides professional secretarial and office management support to the firm. She has had 8 years experience as team secretary and PA in several major London-based financial institutions and she brings a wide range of skills to C&A that include proficiency in MS Office, excellent typing skills and friendly public relations.
Elizabeth Booysen
Receptionist
Elizabeth Booysen or Lizzie as she is affectionately known, joined the firm in July 2004. Her constant smile makes her perfectly suited for the role of receptionist, greeting clients when they attend meetings at the firm’s Cape Town office and efficiently transferring telephone calls. Lizzie is also responsible for some office administration including faxing, scanning and photocopying, and is in charge of the day-to-day maintenance of the firm’s filing system.
Amanda Mkalelwa
Caterer, housekeeper and messenger
Amanda Mkalelwa joined the firm on a part-time basis in April 2005 and became a full-time employee in September of that year. A very capable and enthusiastic cook, Amanda fulfils all the firm’s catering needs including the preparation of delicious lunches for the staff. She is also responsible for general administration, as well as delivering and collecting of mail and documents.
