International work

Our lawyers also undertake work for our sister firm, EnAct International. EnAct is a specialist environmental law and policy consultancy with extensive international experience (particularly within the Southern African Development Community) and has been awarded a Mail & Guardian "Greening the Future" award for innovative practices that improve business performance.

As a result of the work that our lawyers have done in more than 20 countries (see www.enact-international.com) and the books and articles that they have written, Cullinan and Associates is known and respected internationally.

Our lawyers have:

  • advised on the design and implementation of governance systems to promote sustainability in more than 23 countries (including drafting legislation, guidelines, permits and other regulatory tools);
  • drafted and negotiated complex international environmental treaties (e.g. the treaty establishing the Benguela Current Commission, the Lake Tanganyika Convention and the Forests Protocol to the SADC treaty);
  • addressed the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York on environmental governance issues and major international environmental conferences such as: the UNFCCC COP 15 (Copenhagen, Denmark) and COP 17 (Durban), and the 20012 Rio+20 (Brazil); the C40 Cities Climate Change Conference (Hong Kong, China), and the People’s World Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth (Cochabamba, Bolivia) and the Sydney Opera House Festival of Dangerous Ideas (Austalia); and
  • written publications or articles for the IUCN, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and the European Commission on many topics (e.g. the legal and institutional aspects of integrated coastal management, the monitoring control and surveillance of fishing vessels, the regulation of foreign land ownership, and the regulation of agricultural marketing).
